SNOW JUSTICE FOR MOSBOROUGH EFFORTS

In a game that no one expected to go ahead, the Sheffield Medics fought hard to cling on to a narrow 7-12 victory away at mid-table opponents, Mosborough.

It was a slow start to the game as both teams were finding their feet again after a long break because of the recent adverse weather conditions. No amount of ‘snow rugby’ could’ve made up for this. Due to this and a ball that might as well have been a bar of soap, the game was dominated by mistakes and turnovers. Medics open side, Fresher George, was impressive on his league debut, putting in tackle after tackle and pouncing on any loose ball around the break downs. The larger, well-drilled Mosborough pack started to take control of the game and ensured that the home team had the lion’s share of possession, but the Medics worked hard in defence and despite a few missed tackles managed to keep the home side from scoring any points. The Medics made the first break-through with the backs Will Coomer and Pete Goodwin capitalising on turnover ball to score under the posts. The successful conversion took the score to 0-7. Apart from this effort, the Medics couldn’t manage to create many more scoring opportunities. Kicker Will Coomer uncharacteristically failing to take advantage of three penalty shots at goal and so at the half way point the away team held a slim lead.

The second half started in very much the manner to the first, with the Mosborough pack controlling possession without ever posing any great threat to the Medics try line and the Medics failing to make use of what little ball they had. With the game in the balance, scrum half Eddy Farmer took advantage of a massive hole in the Mosborough defence from the base of the ruck, to score in the corner, taking the score to 0-12. Coomer stepping up on cue to miss the conversion once more. However, almost immediately the home team had a scrum deep into the Medics twenty-two, due to a lack of discipline in the breakdown from the Medics forwards and another “master class” on how to take a mark from Pete Goodwin. The power of the Mosborough pack was shown once more as they drove the scrum to within an inch of the try line and a couple of phases later had bundled over to score. A successful conversion took the score to 7-12, with the home team very much in the ascendancy. The two sides battled hard for the rest of the game with neither side able to make inroads into their opponents defence. The Medics were significantly aided by the sending off of the Mosborough open side with a second yellow card for Power-bombing the Medics captain, Simon Webster, for standing in an offside position. Fittingly, the game ended after the ball shot out of another scrappy scrum straight into touch. The Medics happy to leave Mosborough with three hard earned points that can make all the difference in a long season.
